Web Survey Bibliography
Collection of high quality data on large scale populations is a priority challenge in nutritional epidemiology. Indeed, numerous clinical, physiopathological and epidemiological studies have underlined the important role of nutritional factors in decreasing or increasing the incidence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, some cancers, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and many others (World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research, 2007 and World Health Organization, 2003). These illnesses represent a heavy burden for public health in many countries due to the high mortality rate and high health care costs incurred by them. Identifying nutrition-related risk and protective factors is a necessary step in the improvement of nutritional recommendations, hence the health status of populations. However, these diseases are of multiple origins comprising genetic, biologic, behavioral and environmental factors. In order to untangle the specific role of nutritional factors, cohorts based on very large population-based samples, collecting data on precisely-measured dietary intake and all necessary information for accurately assessing potential confounding factors are needed. However, large prospective cohort studies, involving several thousands or hundreds of thousands of subjects and collecting good quality data on various potential confounders, require very heavy logistical resources to manage printing and mailing of questionnaires, and data processing, uploading, and cleaning.
